In a perfect world, there wouldn't be fleas; unfortunately, Mother Nature has her own ideas how to run this globe, and for some reason, fleas fit into that scheme. However, while the planet may be teeming with fleas, you can make your own little world more perfect by eliminating fleas through the use of flea combs for cats.

Even more significant is that regular use of flea combs for cats goes far in preventing flea infestations before they get out of control and really make your cat miserable. A good flea comb is able to collect not only adult fleas, but the eggs and larva they leave in kitty's fur. There are other features you should seek out when purchasing a flea comb for cats, but we'll cover those after showing you the top five flea combs for cats which we uncovered and recommend.

Description
Help remove pests from your furry friend with the Hertzko Double Row Teeth Dog & Cat Flea Comb. It features a double row of closely spaced metal pins to clear away fleas, flea eggs, deb...

With the Hertzko Cat Flea Comb, you are treated to a double-toothed cat flea comb, which is great in managing de-shedding, but makes flea management a bit trickier. This is because you need to look carefully between the rows of teeth to find some vermin, as compared to single-toothed cat flea combs which are easier to check for fleas and then remove.

We have to admit we loved the crazy color and the feel of the grip, which doesn't slip when trying to contain kitty and do the brushing in one fell swoop. This is definitely a high quality brush, perhaps most useful in households with both cats and dogs, as this brush can do the job for both species.

Perfect for cats or dogs, 4-piece Pet Combs
Bright and vivid colors ;you can keep them separate for each pet use
Made from plastic material, narrow toothed and two side design, keeps your hair neat...

We are often a bit wary about using plastic combs, since metal combs are much sturdier and teeth are less likely to break off, but we are making an exception for the Honbay 4 Piece Flea Combs. For one thing, you get four combs in each pack so if too many teeth break off, just toss it and grab another one. This is also a good choice for homes with multiple cat residents, as you can dedicate a cat flea comb to each feline member of the house.

We also love the grip more than many of the cold metal cat flea combs we tried; it fits well, feeling comfortable and natural. Plus you worry less about the teeth contacting skin and possibly scratching up your cat's tender skin.

Designed to better serve cats with longer hair, the H&H Pets Cat Flea Comb boasts much longer teeth than a typical cat flea brush, which helps in removing excess fur along with pesky fleas. The teeth are designed a little closer than other flea combs we tested, which makes for better capturing of the bugs and dunking them in water, but a bit trickier when encountering clumps or knots of fur.

Knowing how saturated the cat flea comb market has become, the company wisely prices their product competitively. Plus, we can't help getting a warm feeling within by patronizing H&H Pets, since they donate a healthy 15% of their profits to the animal rescue organizations, a truly worthy and appropriate cause.

The Sentry Cat Flea Comb bears a remarkable similarity to the Safari product we already reviewed, but offers enough differences to warrant its appearance on our list. It, too, uses metal teeth which are nicely aligned to effective sweep up fleas, along with other dirt and debris.

The handle offers a wider breadth, but it's not unwieldy; rather, it allows for easier rotation during combing, which can be helpful for sensitive or harder-to-reach areas of your kitty. The real selling point for this cat flea comb is its incredibly low price. For budget-conscious individuals, you can't go wrong with this cat flea comb, as it is hardy and durable while remaining super affordable.

Why You Should Use a Flea Comb for Cats

The primary reason you should regularly use cat flea combs is the elimination of fleas on your cat and in your home. Combing your cat regularly is a habit you should develop; not only will the kitty be more familiar with the cat flea comb, but it also roots out fleas before they can take hold and begin mating. Other side benefits include removing clotted or matted fur, while greatly reducing instances of hairballs.

Cat Flea Combs Can Be Very Effective

If you are already suffering from a flea infestation, you need to target the entire flea life cycle, something that cat flea combs are not as effective at resolving as compared to cat flea collars and topical treatments. Topical treatments are typically a one-time application that lasts for a month. A topical treatment targets the full life cycle of fleas, slowing growth in young fleas, so they cannot mature and mate, and paralyzing adults, which effectively halts them from reproducing as well. Cat flea collars are less effective, but if you have an outdoor cat, it does emit gases harmless to kitty while repelling fleas,

However, if you are not in the midst of a flea infestation, cat flea combs are likely your best bet for keeping those annoying bugs off your cat and out of your home.

Comparing Plastic and Metal Cat Flea Combs

Not always, but typically, metal combs are more durable and reliable than their plastic counterparts. Knowing this fact, manufacturers often charge more for metal combs because they are less likely to break or lose teeth.

If you do choose metal, look for stainless steel models, as they have a better reputation for durability than other metal cat flea combs. Keep in mind that, of all the cat flea combs on our recommended list, four of them feature metal teeth. It's pretty rare to find reliable plastic cat flea combs, but we did discover one acceptable plastic cat flea comb: the Honbay 4 Piece Flea Combs.

Best Use Tips for Flea Combs for Cats

If your cat is picky and sensitive, then she or he is a true feline! This means when approaching your kitty with a new cat accessory, a gentle and soothing approach is strongly recommended, particularly with a cat flea comb which gives a tight and close combing. However, grooming is an essential aspect of cat care. Through a careful and proper introduction, your cat will not only tolerate a cat flea comb but could end up loving the results: no fleas, shinier coat, and fewer or no mats. Accordingly, check out the tips below to make your cat grooming sessions successful and fruitful.

Timing

There are definite times when your cat is not in the mood for attention or physical care; obviously, such times are not right for introducing and using a cat flea comb to kitty. Observe your cat and you will find that when they are cleaning themselves after meals, preparing to sleep, or seeking attention are excellent times to join begin the grooming process.

It also helps to start gently, using a soft, calming voice, and not comb too deeply initially. Chances are that when you approach your cat during quiet and restful moments, and you use low tones and soft strokes, your kitty will start running to your for more "love" rubs whenever you pull out their beloved cat flea comb.

Careful and Gentle Brushing

When brushing, position your cat flea comb so the teeth are at a 45° angle: this helps avoid the sharp ends of the teeth from scratching the tender skin of your cat too hard. That being said, most cats love a slight scratching on their skin and the cat flea comb can accomplish that feat quite easily. With a slow brushing stroke, you can navigate the depths and thickness of the fur without snagging it on small knots of hair.

Killing Fleas

Removing fleas from kitty is just the first step; if you don't kill them, they'll head right back to any warm body filled with tasty blood, most usually cats and dogs since they can hide so much better in their coats than on bare skin. Good cat flea combs will eliminate eggs and larva along with adult fleas; the eggs and larva are easy to dispose of, but adult fleas need to be killed, or they'll get right back to their nasty work.

There are two effective methods for effectively killing fleas:

  • Crushing - place the flea on a piece of paper or tissue; using your thumbnail or another flat object, press until you feel a "pop"
  • Drowning - have a small bowl of soapy water in which you can dip your cat flea comb; once in water, there is no escape except down the drain

Preventing Infestations

When it comes to flea infestations, an ounce of prevention is much preferable to the gallons of cure you will face if those pesky fleas decide to make camp in your carpets, drapes, and other fabrics.

Preventing such misery is simple: be consistent and regularly use a cat flea comb with all of your cats. You will find that, over time, your kitty will love the good feeling, smoother coat, and flea-free skin. You will love a world without fleas as well... making a win-win situation for you and your cat, and a win-lose situation for your home and annoying fleas.
